Outdoor Education

A formal and informal outdoor activity programme has been run at ICS for many years. The programme aims to offer a variety of opportunities for the students to build skills and confidence by taking part in limited risk outdoor activities, suited to their age and physical capabilities.

The formal programme is constructed around the field trips at 6th and 8th Grade. In addition, all 6th and 7th Grade students have the opportunity to climb and kayak in summer and autumn terms, leading to certificates of competence. All 8th Grade students have a camping and walking experience in the Glarner Alps during Activity Week in September.

The 8th Grade Summer Term Field Trip in Anzere, a mountain resort in French-speaking Switzerland, is also activity-based. It includes a 22 km hike and the opportunity for students to camp out for a night in a shelter that they construct.

The 10th Grade students have the opportunity to take part in a month-long expedition, incorporating a week of local community service, in a developing country. Previous expeditions have been to Ecuador, India and Peru. In the summer of 2012 the students will visit Nepal.

Ninth Grade students have the opportunity to visit Moshi, Tanzania to take part in a service project in the Easter vacation.
